This week we take two well known but less traveled European cities and compare the pros/cons of traveling to each and ultimately crown one the Sensible place to travel.
Things to Do
Copenhagen
- An old time amusement park (Tivoli Gardens)
- Inspiration for Walt Disney’s Disneyland
- A hippie commune called “Christiania”
- You should consider if this is something you’ll enjoy visiting as the main attraction is essentially people
- Canals with fun electric boat rides
- Statues honoring Hans Christian Andersen and “The Little Mermaid”
- Although, the famous Little Mermaid statue is a bit underwhelming if we’re being honest.
- A royal residence with a mediocre changing of the guard ceremony
Krakow
- Krakow’s main square/Old Town and Florian’s Gate
- Town square with a variety of activities going on
- Krakow Castle/Cathedral
- Day trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau
- Take the local bus which is relatively cheap and easy to use
- Visit Oskar Schindler’s Factory (World War II Museum)
- One of the most entertaining museums in the world
- Visit the salt mines
- Dive deep into the salt mines and view all sorts of objects made out of salt
- Extend your trip by taking an overnight train to Prague
- Beautiful Christmas market if it’s the season
Food
Copenhagen
- It has world famous food
- World’s top ranked restaurant in 2022 (Geranium)
- Enjoy open face sandwiches
- But you might want to avoid the pickled herring
- No open container laws on alcohol
- This leads to bottles and trash laying around which can make the city feel a bit dirty at times.
Krakow
- Plenty of wonderful food and drink options at very low cost compared to the rest of Europe
- Fabulous vodka
- All the pierogies
Value
Copenhagen
- While Denmark/Copenhagen is the cheapest of the Scandinavian countries, Scandinavia is still expensive compared to most other parts of the world.
- Hotels/Airbnbs are relatively expensive for what you get.
- Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) often runs decent airfare deals to Copenhagen from around the world.
- Due to the party nature of the city it can feel a bit dirty at times when you stumble upon bins filled with bottles
Krakow
- Super affordable hotels/Airbnb’s located near the city center
- Cheap great food and drink
- Clean streets and sidewalks
- Easy to use clean and cheap buses and trains
- International airlines outside of Europe don’t have direct flights making it more expensive to visit
- Cold weather in the winter
