The “Heart of India” takes on the “Red City”. We break down the pros and cons of visiting Delhi and Marrakesh and ultimately tell you which one should sit higher on your travel list.
Sensible Traveler’s Hot Take
Both Delhi and Marrakesh boast their own unique and vibrant cultures, offering a wealth of sights, sounds and flavors to travelers. They can be crowded, loud, hot, dirty colorful and everything in between.
While Delhi is undoubtedly larger, Marrakesh can be quite overwhelming, especially if you get lost in the Medina. On the other hand, navigating the bustling streets of Delhi can be a nightmare due to heavy traffic! Sensible accommodations are more prevalent in Marrakesh (i.e., Riads) and will likely be more unique and less costly than hotels/Airbnb’s in Delhi but you’re going to have much more diverse food in Delhi as one can only eat so much cous cous and tangine in Marrakesh. Both cities have unique architecture and can get extremely hot in the summer so it’s a very difficult decision to crown one a winner. However, you will have a better understanding of both of these places by the end of the article and we will tell you which one you should prioritize!
Things to Do
Delhi
- Red Fort – This Unesco heritage site has deep history and impressive architecture.
- It will be very busy and you likely will not learn much of the significance of the fort but it’s worth a visit.
- Raj Ghat – Impressive memorial to Ghandi.
- Day trip to Taj Mahal and Agra Fort
- No need to actually stay a night in Agra as there isn’t much to do there beyond the Taj and Agra Fort which makes it an ideal day trip from Delhi.
- Lotus Temple – Impressive place of worship to see and they allow you to go inside.
- Humayun’s Tomb – Beautiful tomb in the heart of the city surrounded by lush gardens and forest.
- End your trip by flying to Goa and spending a few days on the beach.
Marrakesh
- Get lost in the Medina/View the architecture.
- It’s fun to get lost in the winding roads of the city but it can become frustrating after a while!
- Barter for something
- It’s fun for extroverts to constantly barter but it gets exhausting and allows locals to really take advantage of tourists.
- Architecture
- There are some fabulous looking buildings in Marrakesh such as the Ben Youssef Madrasa and the Majorelle Gardens but you’ll also find it dirty an dusty, not unlike Delhi
- Visit a Morrocan Hammam
- If you’re a tough guy/gal you’ll love this type of massage as they give you a bit of pain before the relaxation.
- Majorelle Gardens
- If you’re not melting outside, take a stroll through the beautiful gardens.
- Since you’ve traveled this far you should make sure you take an extra few days to drive down to the Sahara desert and sleep under the stars. You don’t sleep well but it’s incredible!
Food
Delhi
- Eating Indian food in Delhi will change your negative opinion about Indian food (if you have one).
- If you want to *splurge you can’t go wrong with Indian Accent which is consistently ranked as one of Asia’s best restaurants.
- Food can be found for very cheap (we’re talking a few US dollars or less)!
- Be cautious with street food as your stomach may not be used to how the locals prepare it.
- Kingfisher is the beer of choice here.
Marrakesh
- Tangine is good but it gets tiring after a while.
- You can keep it interesting by taking a cooking class and learning how it’s made.
- Camel Burgers are certainly better than Big Mac’s!
- It’s more of a tea town than coffee place and you’ll often be offered it for free! Keeps you hydrated!
- Alcohol isn’t super common but you can get it in certain grocery stores. You might need a cool beer to beat that heat and you keep it cool by obtaining a free cooler!
Value
Delhi
- Many airports around the world have direct flights to India.
- Cheapest flight will be on Air India but you’ll likely sacrifice some quality with this airline
- Hotels/Airbnbs range drastically in price and quality. Focus on a place with a good “Cleanliness” rating.
- Traffic is terrible but Ubers are very cheap and most of the major sights are relatively near each other.
- Depending on the time of year it can be hot and very polluted.
Marrakesh
- You can find cheap flights from most of Europe and some African countries for a visit to Marrakesh.
- Hotels (Riads) are relatively cheap for the quality that one gets when staying.
- You can easily get taken advantage of by the locals as much of what you pay for is a negotiation.
- Food isn’t cheap but it isn’t expensive either.
- Be prepared for really hot weather in the summer. In fact, just don’t visit in the summer.
