Copenhagen

Sensible Traveler’s Hot Take:

Copenhagen is a great spot to be visited without kids BUT I could easily envision it being an equally valuable destination to visit with kids (it is the home of Legos). The open container laws along with a vibrant food and music scene make this place a great spot for those looking to have a good time. I initially found the city a bit dirty (likely due to my less than stellar Airbnb and the fact that a heavy metal rock music festival had taken the city by storm during our visit) but soon forgot about it due to the great weather and positive energy buzzing through the city over the weekend. I would certainly try and visit over a weekend to take advantage of the late night scene and avoid during the winter months, which is true for all Scandinavian cities because nobody likes to freeze. Lodging was expensive which is why we ended up in a dirty Airbnb but the city is cheaper than the rest of the neighboring countries so consider it a budget trip to Scandinavia!

Top Things to Do in Copenhagen:

  1. An old time amusement park (Tivoli Gardens)
    1. Inspiration for Walt Disney’s Disneyland
  2. A hippie commune called “Christiania”
    1. You should consider if this is something you’ll enjoy visiting as the main attraction is essentially people
  3. Canals with fun electric boat rides
    1. Do this early in your visit which will help you get a good feel for the city
  4. Statues honoring Hans Christian Andersen and “The Little Mermaid”
    1. Although, the famous Little Mermaid statue is a bit underwhelming if we’re being honest
  5. A royal residence with a mediocre changing of the guard ceremony

Food to Eat in Copenhagen:

  1. It has world famous food
    1. World’s top ranked restaurant in 2022 (Geranium)
  2. Enjoy open face sandwiches
    1. But you might want to avoid the pickled herring
  3. No open container laws on alcohol
    1. This leads to bottles and trash laying around which can make the city feel a bit dirty at times.

Value:

  1. While Denmark/Copenhagen is the cheapest of the scandinavian countries, Scandinavia is still expensive compared to most other parts of Europe and the world.
  2. Hotels/Airbnbs are relatively expensive for what you get.
  3. Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) often runs decent airfare deals to Copenhagen from around the world.
  4. Due to the party nature of the city it can feel a bit dirty at times when you stumble upon bins filled with bottles but this becomes less of a nuisance if your own alcohol consumption increases (i.e. if you can’t beat them, join them).

Time Needed: 2 Full Days
